Art Contest Guidelines & Judging Criteria

Guidelines for Entry

  1. Eligibility:
    • Open to individuals age 16 and older.
  2. Artwork Requirements:
    • Submissions must be created on 10” x 10” OR 12” x 12” paper.
    • The winning artwork will be reproduced onto an 8’ x 8’ backdrop displayed as a photo opportunity at the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention.
    • Artwork must include the text:  Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention.
  3. Submission Process:
    • By Email: Send a high-quality image of your completed artwork to monteia.moore@athens.edu.
    • By Mail: Send to:

    • In Person: Arrange a drop-off time by emailing monteia.moore@athens.edu.
  4. Deadline & Winner Announcement:
    • Submission Deadline: June 15, 2025
    • Winner Notification: The winner will be contacted by phone or email on June 30, 2025.
    • Public Announcement: The winning artwork will be announced on The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Facebook page on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
    • Prize:  The winner will be awarded a $500 gift card, which must be picked up in person (at a time arranged and coordinated with contest organizers.)

Judging Criteria

Entries will be evaluated based on the following:

  • Relevance to the Theme: The artwork should reflect the spirit of the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention, with a strong emphasis on the fiddle and its role in old-time music.
  • Visual Impact & Aesthetic Appeal: The design should be engaging and eye-catching as a festival backdrop.
  • Composition & Layout: A well-balanced and visually appealing arrangement is essential.
  • Creativity & Originality: Submissions should showcase unique artistic expression while being suitable for a festival setting.
  • Clarity & Readability: The design should remain clear and recognizable when enlarged.
  • Use of Color & Contrast: Colors should enhance the design and remain visible in various lighting conditions.
  • Technical Skill & Craftsmanship: The artwork should demonstrate strong artistic techniques and attention to detail.
  • Functionality as a Photo Opportunity: The backdrop should create an inviting and interactive space for festival attendees, incorporating elements of old-time fiddling in a way that enhances the overall festival experience.
